Every game on this page runs in your browser: press play and you're in a haunted puppet theater, on a date that goes very wrong, or hiding from something that listens through your microphone. These are free horror games online made by indie developers, from story-heavy visual novels and yandere dating sims to short scary games you can finish on a lunch break.
Play horror games online without downloading
Each game loads inside its own page. You press Play, the game streams in, and there is nothing to install and no account to make. Most are Ren’Py visual novels or small HTML5 games from indie developers, which is what makes them work as browser horror games: the story, art and sound load straight into the tab.
A few practical notes we gathered from the individual game pages. Big builds take a moment, and Bound By Insanity is heavy enough that its title screen can take a while to appear. Some games want a keyboard: Helping Your Boyfriend throws quick-time events at you on the arrow keys and Space. And Escape the Ayuwoki asks for your microphone, because the creature in that house hunts by sound. Use the full-screen button on each game page instead of zooming the browser, and keep the sound on, since many of them do their work through audio.
If you only try one of the horror games online here, start with Kingdom Of Marionettes, the game this site is named after: a night guard takes a job at an abandoned theater and finds out the puppets are not as lifeless as they look. The video below shows every ending, so skip it if you want to find them yourself.
What kind of horror games online can you play here?
We sort the collection into five types. Most games sit in one, and some fit two: a yandere romance can also be a horror dating sim, and a meme game can still make you jump.

Yandere games
Someone loves you far too much, and your choices decide whether you walk away. The Freak Circus puts a café waitress between two obsessed performers, and Helping Your Boyfriend hides its problem inside a pastel romance with a doctor. The full list, including games that also fit another type, is on our yandere games page.

Psychological horror visual novels
You read and choose, and the fear comes from people and slowly uncovered truths rather than monsters jumping out. The Coffin of Andy and Leyley locks two siblings in a quarantined apartment, and Nate Hand Gesture turns rock-paper-scissors with a human-eating entity into a test of mood. All eleven are compared on our psychological horror visual novels page.

Horror dating sims
Your date is a demon, a clown or something hungry, or an ordinary date slowly stops being ordinary. In I Can Smell You From Here your first dating-app match wants to eat you, and How to date a Sleep Paralysis Demon is exactly what it says, with seven endings. Our horror romance visual novels page lists who you can date in each one.

Short scary games
Hide, run or last until morning, usually in under half an hour. Five Nights at Epstein’s is all camera routes and vent timing, and in Jeep Horror you drive a night jeepney where the rear-view mirror is the only way to tell a passenger from a monster. These are the scary games online to pick when you have ten minutes, not a whole evening, and our short horror games page shows how each run ends.

Funny horror games
Horror played for laughs, built on memes, parodies and jokes about famous horror series. Five Nights At Diddy’s spoofs the camera-watching night shift, and in You Are Hamster you are a pet who notices something in the bedroom that its owner can’t see. Our funny horror games page rates how scary each one really is.
One more group sits at the bottom of the grid above. Dawn Chorus, Only One Bed at the Inn and Class of ‘09 come from the same corner of indie visual novels, but they aren’t horror: a science-camp romance in snowy Norway, a fantasy inn romance and a satirical 2000s teen comedy. They’re listed so you can find them, not because they will scare you.
Most played free horror games online this month
This list isn’t our pick. It ranks the free horror games online that people actually opened on this site from Google search over the last 28 days, and it refreshes whenever we add a game. Kingdom Of Marionettes lives on the homepage, so it is left out to make room for the rest of the collection.
1Anomalous Coffee Machine 2An interactive text experiment where you chat with a coffee machine that brews any word you type — emotions, concepts, even egos — into a drink and a strange new mental state.
2The Coffin of Andy and LeyleyA dark narrative horror game where siblings Andy and Leyley struggle to survive in a quarantined apartment after their parents vanish and the outside world descends into chaos.
3Helping Your BoyfriendA caring doctor, a strange nightly routine, and a visitor who turns a pastel romance into a disturbing mystery.
4The Freak CircusA yandere-style dating simulation set in a mysterious traveling circus, where a café waitress becomes the obsession of two dangerous circus performers — the silent Pierrot and the seductive Harlequin.
5Nate Hand GestureA short psychological horror visual novel where a human-eating entity turns rock-paper-scissors into a dangerous test of mood, trust, and survival.
Free horror games online compared: playtime, endings and age labels
We went through the write-up for every horror game on the site and pulled out the playtime, the number of endings and the age label wherever the page states them. The quickest is You Are Hamster at about ten minutes. Jeep Horror takes 10 to 20, the Gentle Fall preview 15 to 20, and I Can Smell You From Here 15 to 30 with five endings to find.
If you’d rather have a lot to uncover, The False Sun has 20 endings, Survive Min has nine and How to date a Sleep Paralysis Demon has seven. The table only lists free horror games online whose pages give at least one of these numbers, sorted by how often people here play them. A dash means that page doesn’t say, and we’d rather leave a gap than guess.

Before you play horror games online: content warnings
Most of these games are written for older teens and adults. Four carry an explicit 18+ label: Bound By Insanity, Jeep Horror, Nate Hand Gesture and Where The Spotlight Lingers. The Art Shop is marked 16+. Of the 34 horror titles here, 17 have their own content-warning list. Across those lists, death comes up most often (5 games), then blood (4), then violence, body horror, strong language and toxic relationships (3 each).
The scariest thing in these horror games online is often not a jumpscare. Yandere stories and psychological horror deal with manipulation and abuse, and soft art doesn’t make that lighter. Helping Your Boyfriend looks like a pastel romance and lists drug use, cartoon gore and obsessive behavior. DNR: Do Not Reciprocate keeps a bright clinical palette while it gets into drugging and forced procedures. Each game page carries its own warning list, so read it first, and close the tab whenever a story stops being fun.
