That ordinariness is the point. You are almost a year into a university degree, you still have not made a single friend, and every day looks exactly like the one before it. The only thing that feels different is a vague, persistent sense of being watched. Gentle Fall spends its first chapter letting that feeling grow until it finally has a face.

A September that starts watching back

This Gentle Fall preview covers one long day. There is a train ride through a city lit gold by the morning sun, a coffee order at a small café called Brook Brews, a lab workshop you would honestly rather skip, and an afternoon in a library that is far emptier than it should be. None of it is dramatic on paper, and that restraint is exactly why the closing minutes of Gentle Fall land as hard as they do.

The writing in Gentle Fall is careful about what it lets you notice. Chester, the classmate who asks to be your partner, mentions that he has “observed” how you talk to people long before you bring it up yourself. He describes making friends as a problem he intends to solve “with enough field study.” Every line is polite, and every line sits slightly wrong.

Meet the Gentle Fall cast

Chester is the heart of Gentle Fall: an extremely tall, extremely formal student with tired eyes and a voice the narration compares to being cooed by a robot. He is awkward, oddly sweet whenever he is praised, and genuinely talented in the lab. He also leaves a small black notebook behind after the workshop, and he comes back for it remarkably fast.

Lukas is new to this version of the story, a loud and cheerful blond stranger who ends up wearing your drink and still calls you cute on his way out the door. The other newcomer is a long-haired, painfully shy librarian who hands you a note instead of speaking and disappears before you can answer. Both are plainly being set up for later chapters of Gentle Fall.

Choices that end up on paper

Gentle Fall is mostly reading, but it keeps asking small questions. Are you shy or outgoing? How tall are you? What do you order at the café? Is your first impression of Chester that he seems kind, intimidating or beautiful? The narration adjusts to each answer, and Chester changes how he approaches the conversation depending on the personality you give yourself.

One of those harmless answers comes back later in the most unnerving moment Gentle Fall has so far. We will not say which one, but it is worth playing twice with different choices just to compare how closely you were paying attention against how closely he was.

What this build includes

This is a rebuilt edition of the Gentle Fall demo first released in 2023. The update brought redrawn art, a new interface, fresh music and sound, and the two new characters described above. For now it covers the reworked opening chapter and stops with an end-of-preview message, so expect roughly fifteen to twenty minutes of reading rather than a finished story. Gentle Fall is still in development, and further chapters are planned.

Content warnings

A warning screen appears the first time you start the game, and it is worth taking seriously. It lists stalking, psychological abuse, non-consensual drug use, panic attacks, mentions of pet death and minor jumpscares, and the wider project also deals with suicide and self-harm. The current preview mostly builds dread rather than showing much of that directly, but the warnings describe where the story is heading. If Gentle Fall ever becomes too heavy, it is fine to step away and come back later.
